My Inspiration
The political accomplishments of Nelson Mandela are truly inspiring. To know that someone spent over twenty-five years in prison to fight for the advancement of mankind is remarkable. Nelson Mandela fought against oppression and helped craft one of the finest pieces of public policy. On December 10, 1996 President Mandela signed the Constitution of South Africa into law. This document is not only a powerful piece of literature, but it sets a paradigm that more countries should follow. The post-Apartheid South African Constitution demonstrates that you can find opportunity inside human tragedy. The Constitution of South Africa is a model for human rights. Chapter 2 of the South African Constitution guarantees the right to human dignity, equality, and self-determination.
Nelson Mandela’s passion for public service, human rights, and community advocacy is one reason I fell in love with public policy. I want to devote my career to improving policy because I deeply care about the advancement of humanity.

“I am fundamentally an optimist. Whether that comes from nature or nurture, I cannot say. Part of being optimistic is keeping one's head pointed toward the sun, one's feet moving forward.”
